Refrigerator shopping involves two different “sizes”: the exterior dimensions that must fit the kitchen and the interior capacity advertised in cubic feet. This tool handles both calculations without pretending gross volume equals usable shelf space.

How to measure a refrigerator opening
- Measure width at the top, middle and bottom; use the smallest figure.
- Measure height at both sides and the centre; use the smallest figure.
- Measure depth to the point the appliance body may reach, accounting for counters, baseboards and connections.
- Enter the ventilation clearances required by the exact candidate model’s installation guide.
The result subtracts two side clearances, one top clearance and the rear clearance. It does not calculate hinge height, handle projection, door swing, drawer pull-out space or the route through doors and hallways, so check those separately.
How refrigerator cubic feet are calculated
For a rectangular compartment, multiply interior width × height × depth in inches, then divide by 1,728. Real refrigerator cavities contain shelves, drawers, ducts, lights and curved or stepped surfaces, so this is a gross geometric estimate rather than the manufacturer’s certified usable capacity.
ENERGY STAR notes that highly efficient refrigerator models are often in the 16–20 cubic-foot range, but capacity should still reflect the household’s actual storage and shopping pattern. Larger exterior size can also increase energy use.

Confirm the model number and its installation drawing, including water-line bend radius and electrical-receptacle position. Also measure every doorway and turn on the delivery route.
